Combining text and emotive scribbles, Cara Obers newest series of drawings titled Love Letters is paradoxically straightforward and intricate. Referencing an assignment or diary, hand-drawn notebook paper sheets create an ordered structure which contrast childlike scrawls of crayon, colored pencil, and magic marker. Quotations in Edwardian Script from pop culture, poetry, and the artists own diary blend together to communicate a particular (sub)urban experience. In Love Letters, Ober playfully questions the role of the artists hand, in creating expressive and generic marks. Simultaneously building internal and external narratives, Ober constructs a multifaceted index of pop culture as public mythology.
